Therefore, a diagnosis of cycloid psychosis was considered most appropriate (table 1). Treatment with one or a combination of mood stabilisers such as lithium (0–8 mmol/l), and/or valproic acid (60 mg/l), resulted in a full recovery and prevention of relapses of both psychotic episodes and mood and behavioural instability.
Conclusions: ECT is an effective treatment for cycloid psychosis. Future studies need to compare the outcome of ECT to that of other treatment strategies. Clinical

They are mild schizophrenic psychoses in which constitutional factors have arrested the progress of the disease, so that the illness is not followed by a personality defect. In this group, 4 females and 3 males fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for cycloid psychosis based on the definition of Leonhard and Perris. Overall, the 1-year incidence for first admission in cycloid psychoses per 100,000 inhabitants of the age group 15–50 years was 5.0 in females and 3.6 in males [18]. @article{70167ceb-cdb1-48a2-987b-713c84f4fdff, abstract = {Eight patients meeting Leonhard's criteria for cycloid psychosis were investigated on repeated occasions during a psychotic episode, with regional cerebral blood flow measurements and clinical ratings.
Information concerning background, presenting illness and follow-up was compared with that from the case-records of patients with schizophrenic, affective and schizoaffective psychoses. Between LCP on the one hand and ICD-APP and DSM-BPD on the other hand a concordance rate of 0.58 and 0.35 (both p < 0.001) was present respectively ( Figure 1a,b ).
In addition, using the symptom checklist of Leonhard12,41 (Table 1), an internationally recognized psychiatrist (GS) delineated pa-tients with LCP. Accordingly, a division into the three subtypes of cycloid psychosis was performed. However, the two conceptualizations of the disorder are not the same and Cycloid patients had levels of psychotic, disorganization and first-rank symptoms comparable to schizophrenia, and levels of affective symptoms in-between schizophrenia and mood disorders. Regarding most clinical variables and morbidity risk of mood disorders, cycloid psychosis was closer to mood disorders. The concept of cycloid psychosis dates back to the work of Bénédict Morel in 1857 (Morel, 1857) and was further developed by Valentin Magnan in 1895 (Magnan, 1895). This latter author was the first to publish a scientific paper identifying a clinical entity characterized by sudden onset of polymorphous psychotic symptomatology.
